Logarithms are misunderstood. Students treat them like magic spells—arbitrary rules to be memorized. In reality, a Logarithm is simply an exponent in reverse. It is the mathematical tool we use to measure Magnitude. It counts digits instead of numbers. It turns multiplication into addition.

Addition has a reverse (Subtraction). Multiplication has a reverse (Division).
Exponents have a reverse: Logarithms.

Question: How long will it take to double my money at 8% interest?
Formula: 72 / Interest Rate.
• 72 / 8 = 9 Years.
• At 10% interest? 7.2 Years.
Why 72? It comes from the Natural Log of 2 (ln(2) ≈ 0.693). Multiplied by 100 gives 69.3. We use 72 because it's easily divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9.
6. Computer Science: Big O Notation
Programmers love O(log n). It represents extreme efficiency.
Imagine looking for a name in a phone book with 1,000,000,000 (1 Billion) pages.
• Linear Search: Check page 1, then 2... Maximum 1 Billion steps.
• Binary Search (Logarithmic): Split the book in half. Is it on Left or Right? Discard half. Repeat.
How many cuts to turn 1 Billion into 1? log2(1,000,000,000) ≈ 30.
You can find ANY name in a billion pages in just 30 steps. That is the power of logs.
7. The Natural Log (ln) and 'e'
Standard logs are Base 10.
The "Natural Log" (ln) is Base e (2.718...).
Why? Because 'e' is the speed limit of the universe. It represents 100% continuous growth. ln(x) tells you how much time is needed to reach growth 'x' assuming continuous compounding.
