Case Study / Data Tool

AffordCity

One of the biggest financial decisions a person makes, moving cities, was being made with a quick Google search and a guess. AffordCity was built to replace the guess with a real, honest comparison.

01

The Situation

Someone considering a move from Manchester to London, or from Toronto to Sydney, or from Austin to Seattle, has a genuine need for concrete financial information before they make that decision. What does rent look like? How far does my salary actually go? What does it cost to eat, commute, and live normally?

The existing tools in this space were either behind paywalls, buried in spreadsheets, or so overwhelming with data that they were useless in practice. The people who needed this most, those actively planning a move, had no clean, honest, one-page answer.

02

What We Built

AffordCity is a comparison tool that answers one question well: can you afford to live there, and how does it compare to where you are now. The calculator covers 42 cities across four countries, the four major English-speaking markets that also happen to be the highest CPM advertising markets in the world.

Users select up to two cities, enter their monthly salary if they want a personalised read, and get a side-by-side breakdown across rent, groceries, transport, and dining. The salary reality check uses a simplified tax model to show whether a salary comfortably covers life in that city or how much more would be needed. It is not financial advice. It is the honest starting point for making an informed decision.

The site runs on WordPress, was built with no account or sign-up requirement, and is supported by advertising. That is a deliberate combination. The lower the friction to get an answer, the more people use it. The more people use it, the more the advertising earns. The whole model depends on the tool being genuinely useful, which keeps the incentive structure honest.

AffordCity answers the question people actually type into Google before they decide to move. That is the only kind of tool worth building.

03

The Result

AffordCity is live across four of the most valuable search markets in the world. The most-searched comparisons, New York vs London, Toronto vs Sydney, Austin vs Seattle, are built into the homepage as entry points for organic traffic. The architecture is scalable, the data set is comprehensive, and the tool does its job without asking anything from the person using it.
